Los Angeles On Fire
The radio said over 500 houses have been burned to the ground. hundreds of acres destroyed. humidity, tail end of the santa ana winds, and a sad set of circumstances made Los Angeles wake up. Sort of.
“Dude. I had this girl dancing in the middle of the room!” screamed, Long. “Can i get a cigarette?”
Xavier pulled out his pack and handed him one of twenty. “You need to get a job.” He changed lanes on the 5 freeway.
“We’re getting closer to the fire.” Long stated as he grabbed he cigarette. “I don’t think I’ll call her though.”
“Why not?” asked, Xavier uninterested.
“Because, man, I’m not too into Pilipino girls. No offense, bro.” Long said. “You got a light.”
“Use the car lighter. I’m busy looking handsome.”
“Fucking girl.” Long pushed the car lighter in and waited.
The air was thick with invisible ash. The sky was red-orange. The windshield was getting grayer by the minute. Los Angeles County was in a state of emegency. But no one seeemed to care.
“Ya know, Corn got it real bad.” Mentioned, Xavier. “Been in love with his best friend for over a friggin’ decade.”
“What a pussy.” Long said, lighting is cigarette.” If it was me, I’d have fucked her the second day we hung out!”
“I doubt it.” Retorted, Xavier. “Cookie isn’t like that.”
“Bro, they’re all like that.” Long said exhaling a tendril. “trust me. I should know.”
“Doubt it, man. You’re not me.”
“Fool, I’ve probably fucked more bitches than you.”
“Doubt it.”
“What the fuck are you talking about, man? Bitches like me.”
“Doubt it.”
“Shut the fuck up, man!” Long yelled. “What bitches you fucked?”
“I don’t fuck bitches.” Xavier dryly replied. “That’s the difference, bro.”
“See, that’s the point. Bitches are easier to fuck. So, homie, math terms, since there’s a lot of bitches out in this bitch, that must mean I’ve fucked a lot of bitches, ya bitch!”
“Okay then.” Xavier said. “You probably have fucked more bitches than me.”
“Alright then, motherucker. Just remember that.”
And then it got quiet. The only thing heard was the radio news station reporting that the four fires are far from contained. That some of the houses burned, still had cars parked in their driveways. Interviews of the residents effected by the fires talking about being alive, losing their memories, not being able to go back.
Driving under a canopy of deep red and orange, soot and ash flying at the whim of the warm winds, Xavier and Long continued on to their destination.
“Fuck this fire shit. It’s getting on my nerves.” Long said. “Now I’m really going to kick that europeans ass.”
